Today is my birthday, and as I reflect on my journey so far, I’m reminded of how far I’ve come. I’ve always known that I would find myself in a career that I designed for myself, a career that I had complete control over.
What I didn’t know is how grueling it would be to get here. Starting your own business has the tendency to appear sexy to those on the outside looking in. You take a leap of faith and bet on yourself. And you succeed. And yes, don’t get me wrong that feels great. But as a business owner for the past 7 years, I can tell you that feeling is fleeting.
Client work ebbs and flows. Some days you wonder if someone blacklisted your company because your email and phone are eerily quiet. Then there are other days that your email and phone blow up and you’re fighting to stay above water to manage the inbound.
As I sit here and think about turning another year older, I’m reminded that even though there have been tough times, I’ve learned to stay centered and focus on what I want out of my career. This simple realization has helped me stay committed to my growth and development, no matter how challenging the journey may seem.
In honor of my birthday, I’m sharing some practical tips that have helped me in my journey and can help you too:
Embrace Fear
Anxious high achievers sometimes let fear slow them down or even worse they miss opportunities because the fear of failure is so consuming and overwhelming. The exhilarating feeling of driving straight through your fear can be addicting. Feel the fear and do it anyway.
Competition is Healthy
Acknowledge the existence of your competition, but don’t let it consume you. Don’t lose your uniqueness trying to keep up with others. Instead, double down on your uniqueness and use it to soar ahead.
Take Time For Yourself
What’s one thing you can consistently do for yourself? Is it working out, eating healthy, walking the dogs while you watch the sunset or monthly girls’ nights? Identify the thing that gives you energy and life! And do it as often as you can. Taking time to focus on yourself doesn’t mean that you are a bad employee. It means the opposite. You spending time on yourself means that you will be the best version of yourself.
We Go Further Faster Together
Women in the industry face unique challenges. Who can you turn around and help propel forward? As women in the sports industry, it can be difficult to get to where you want to go alone. There is power in women helping women. We are stronger together.
Ask A Lot of Questions
Communication styles can vary, and if you’re not careful, misunderstandings can quickly escalate. To understand and close gaps quickly, great leaders ask many questions. Don’t makeup stories in your head. Instead, ask questions and try to understand and resolve the gaps.
If You’re Unhappy, Make A Change
If you’re unhappy in your current situation, determine if you can change it. If positive change isn’t possible, come up with a strategic plan to move forward and create a life that empowers and fulfills you.
Focus On What You Want
Just you. Ask yourself these questions: (1) What do you want out of your career? (2) If you aren’t getting it now, what are the steps you are going to take to get there? (3) How long are you going to wait to get what you want? (4) Who is holding you back and why? (5) What’s in it for them? (6) How are you holding yourself back?
As I start the next year of my life, I know one thing for sure, I love the work I get to do. I’m the founder and CEO of a business that coaches high-achieving women and advises companies on the guest experience
Whatever you want in your career could be yours. My question for you is what are doing to go after it? Life feels long and short all at the same time. Don’t wake up one day frustrated and defeated that you are still in the same spot.
